Red Carpet Arrival Highlights From The 2024 Met Gala
The Met Gala 2024 is in the books, and the star-studded event did not disappoint in the fashion department. A-listers brought their best to the Metropolitan Museum of Art, where the theme was "Sleeping Beauties: Reawakening Fashion."
This year's Gala saw a wide array of fashion choices — from shimmering sheers to flowing flowery patterns and more — from some of the world's most exclusive fashion designers. Let's take a look back at some of the highlights from the 2024 Met Gala.
Elle Fanning
Elle Fanning came dressed to impress in a custom-made sheer dress from Balmain, complemented exquisitely with a tasteful selection of Cartier jewelry. Fanning's look channeled the classic Disney princess, and she received glowing reviews on social media.
Not only was this style apparently made for Fanning, it was also completely on point for the Gala's "Sleeping Beauties" theme, which emphasized fragility. The glass-like appearance, along with her Disney princess motif, dovetailed perfectly with the theme.
Emily Ratajkowski
The model doubled down on her Met Gala fashion choices for 2024, wearing not one, but two unique dresses to mark the occasion. For the Gala itself, she wore this glittering, flowing Versace dress.
For the late-night afterparty, Ratajkowski continued her theme of wearing risqué garments with a sheer dress, along with a custom bra and thong from Victoria's Secret. It was a stunning number that was borderline not safe for work.
Janelle Monáe
Monáe recovered from an initial stumble (she literally almost bailed on the steps walking into the Gala) to showcase this incredible look from Vera Wang, a designer she's also showcased several times in the past.
This intriguing Vera Wang Couture dress included a fun wrinkle: The abstract flowers that make up its design are partially made from recycled plastic bottles. Her overall appearance was tied together nicely with these plastic "flowers" also cascading from her hair.
Jennifer Lopez
J-Lo still looks fabulous at 54, and this year's co-chair certainly came dressed to impress when she walked the red carpet. Her sheer gown, custom-made by Schiaparelli, apparently took over 800 hours to be made by hand.
She complemented the gown with an elegant clutch in the same color palette, platform shoes, and a blingy necklace, earrings, rings and bracelet, all provided by Tiffany. This jewelry included more than a hundred carats of diamonds.
Shakira
Shakir — who teamed up with J-Lo for the Super Bowl LIV halftime show — showed off her stuff on the red carpet with a vibrant red gown from Carolina Herrera, complete with a matching cape, ruffled sleeves and long train.
The flamenco-themed outfit matched Shakira's energetic stage persona and was capped off with a stunning starburst ornament on the front of the dress. The glamour of her outfit was offset by her hairstyle, which she kept au naturel and understated.
Gwendoline Christie
The Game of Thrones and Wednesday star created an eye-catching look at the 2024 Gala, wearing a gorgeous textured Maison Margiela gown in a deep orange-red color, along with a sheer black tulle cape.
Christie's clothing choice was relatively low-key (by Met Gala standards at least), but her incredible hairdo created a buzz. Her platinum blond hair seemingly defied gravity as it puffed out into a cloud around her head.
Camila Mendes
Camila Mendes looked incredible in this flowing dress in a soft blush palette. The sequined rosette dress from Joseph Altuzarra had a halter neck design on the front and a sleeveless back, all tied together with a blooming flower motif on the upper bodice.
The gown, elegant in its simplicity, was subtly accentuated with sequins throughout its design. She kept her jewelry to a minimum, opting for a diamond ring and earrings.
Awkwafina
Awkwafina opted for a gown from H&M for her Met Gala arrival. The ensemble, which was custom-made, was based off of the "Hennes" wedding dress from the H&M archives and came in a lovely cream color.
The gown incorporates a distinctive off-the-shoulder neckline, adorned with a daisy-themed decoration made of beads and rhinestones. Awkwafina carried an embroidered pouch bag and high heels in matching tones to complete her look.
Zendaya
There was plenty of buzz surrounding Zendaya's appearance at the 2024 Met Gala. After all, it was her first trip back to the Gala in five years. Moreover, this year saw her serve as the event's co-chair.
The stylish Zendaya started the event with a blue-green Maison Margiela dress, then switched to this vintage black gown from John Galliano. The lace-up bodice and massive skirt (not to mention that bouquet fascinator) certainly turned a few heads.
Ayo Edebiri
Ayo Edibiri, breakout star of The Bear, made her Met Gala debut a night to remember. Her flowery Loewe gown, designed by Jonathan Anderson, was a perfect fit for the event's dress code, "The Garden of Time."
The gown's vibrant and colorful pattern fades away into an elegant white halter top, and the floral motif continued onto the back with vine-themed details. Edebiri capped off her outfit with diamonds from Maison Boucheron.
Lizzo
Lizzo turned heads with this stunning sculpted corset gown from Victor Weinsanto that was custom-made to accentuate her curves. The gown's theme featured flower petals throughout.
While Lizzo's custom gown was a fantastic choice, her unique headgear was also a conversation starter. In all, Weinsanto said that it look somewhere between 600 and 700 hours to put together this incredible Met Gala look.
Lea Michele
Lea Michele chose to accentuate her baby bump with this gorgeous, flowing silk dress from Rodarte. The aquamarine outfit included a flowing train with white flower appliques throughout the ensemble.
The dress gave off a light, airy feel — appropriate not just for the 2024's Gala's theme, but also for the springtime weather in New York. Michele's pink makeup played off of the pink highlights of the flowers on her dress.
Kaia Gerber
Gerber wore a fairly understated — but elegant — strapless white Prada gown which was relatively unadorned aside from large sequins. Her outfit was rounded off with sandals and sparkly diamond jewelry.
Perhaps the simplicity of her dress was intended to draw attention to her hairstyle, which channeled the iconic '90s look of her mom, supermodel Cindy Crawford. Big hair hasn't been particularly fashionable in recent years, but Gerber looks to be bringing back the trend.
Michelle Yeoh
Yeoh went with a much shorter hairstyle than we're used to at the Met Gala, and went with an unexpectedly quirky look for her Met Gala gown. The Demna gown was inspired by tinfoil and space blankets.
Aside from some chandelier earrings (and her Apple Watch), Yeoh let her gown do most of the talking, as its voluminous folds covered up her shoes. She accentuated the silver color with perfectly-applied blush makeup.
Chloë Sevigny
Sevigny threw it back — way back — with her hairdo at the Met Gala, going with "mourning hair," a hairstyle dating back to Victorian England. She continued the theme with repurposed fabrics from that same era.
Sevigny credited her hairstylist, Mustafa Yanaz, for creating the coiffe, and said that the rest of her ensemble was inspired by the look that he created. Overall, it's an intriguing way to bring century-old fashion trends into the 21st century.
Sydney Sweeney
Sydney Sweeney, who at just 26 years old is already a bona fide fashion icon, pulled off an unexpected new look by dying her blonde locks into a striking black bob cut.
She accentuated her look with long black opera gloves to match her new hairdo, and wore a baby blue Miu Miu gown with embroidered flowers. Her gown was completed with a billowing train to cap off the overall look.
Tessa Thompson
The Veronica Mars and Westworld star wore a striking black Chanel number for the Met Gala, complete with a stark black and white floral motif to fit the Gala's theme.
The floral theme continued with her adorable basket of flowers, which complemented the pattern on her dress while also offering a colorful contrast to the otherwise monochromatic outfit. Thompson had a playful hairstyle that synced up perfectly with the lines of her outfit.
Cardi B
Big, luxurious trains are nothing new when it comes to Met Gala gowns, but the "WAP" rapper might have just set a new record for size with her expansive and voluminous train.
The feather-trimmed gown is barely noticeable amid the massive train, but don't overlook this Windowsen number. She capped it all off with a black turban — along with diamond and emerald jewelry — with emerald nail polish to match.
Jodie Turner-Smith
Big fashion events like the Met Gala are a great showcase for stars to debut new looks, and Jodie-Turner Smith used the 2024 Gala to showcase her new hairstyle — a stunning platinum blonde look like we haven't seen before.
Turner-Smith opted for a relatively plain white Burberry dress that was accentuated with a sheer, flowing cape. Like so many others, her dress incorporated a subtle floral pattern to keep with this year's theme.
Erykah Badu
Erykah Badu looked every bit the style icon with this fun, vibrant, eye-popping ensemble from Comme Des Garçons, designed by Rei Kawakubo. Sharp angles, bright colors and oversized graphics were offset by sedate black footwear and headwear.
Badu's headwear was an interesting choice, as it looks like something a Buckingham Palace guard might wear. Either way, it was eye-catching without distracting too much from the main event, which was of course her Comme Des Garçons dress.
Anna Wintour
This isn't the Vogue editor-in-chief's first rodeo — in fact, Anna Wintour has chaired the Met Gala for more than a quarter century. This means that she always knows just what to wear for this annual showcase.
For the 2024 event, she wore a Loewe white dress with floral detailing as a base layer underneath an elegant black coat with more vibrant floral patterns. Ever the style icon, Wintour capped off the look with a flashy diamond necklace and brooch.
Nicki Minaj
While many of the stars to walk the red carpet wore understated floral patterns, Nicki Minaj went in the opposite direction with this bright and fun outfit custom-designed by Miami-based fashionista Francesco Risso.
The floral design leaped right off of Nicki's gown because the flowers were literally three-dimensional metal flowers, all custom-painted in bright colors to match the dress. She wore some flashy jewelry along with her signature bangs to complete the look.
Greta Gerwig
Greta Gerwig was one of several celebs to wear an outfit designed by Chloé, and was accompanied to the event by Chloé creative director Chemena Kamali. Gerwig's sheer black cape offered a glimpse of the black gown underneath.
The simplicity of this black number is a bold choice for the Met Gala, where flashy fashion is typically the order of the day. It was the perfect accompaniment for the director's casual yet playful hairdo.
Sarah Jessica Parker
The 59-year-old Sex and the City star first attended the Met Gala in 1995. Nearly three decades later, she showed that she still has fashion sense like no other.
Sarah Jessica Parker wore an extravagant Philip Treacy headpiece — a signature look for her — along with a Richard Quinn corset gown and Briony Raymond jewelry. Altogether, it made for a mood that would fit right in to the world of Carrie Bradshaw.
Gigi Hadid
Hadid went for a pinup look with crimson lipstick and an elegant hairstyle to go with an off-the-shoulder corset dress from Thom Browne, with the corset accentuating the shape of her hips.
The dress is relatively simplistic in the bodice but takes on a playful tone lower down, with 3D yellow roses and leaves around the hip area. The Browne dress apparently took 70 people an incredible 13,500 hours to create.
Penélope Cruz
Cruz has made no secret of her affinity for Chanel in the past, and for the 2024 Met Gala she went with the tried and true. In other words, she stuck with another Chanel outfit.
Her black off-the-shoulder ballgown came complete with a flowing skirt, and was accentuated with sparkly details. Cruz added some bling to the black number, with a sparkling ring, necklace, and bracelet — all from Chanel High Jewelry, naturally.
Uma Thurman
The garden theme of the 2024 gala prompted many guests to adopt floral motifs, and Uma Thurman's taffeta Tory Burch gown did include some flowers. But there's an interesting wrinkle to her outfit — the fact that it's a shout-out to a now-extinct species of butterfly.
Tory Burch told Vogue that inspiration came from the American Xerces Blue butterfly, which was a stunning iridescent blue in color. Thurman said that both she and Burch were on the same page when it came to designing the gown.
Serena Williams
Serena Williams made her name through dominance on the tennis court, not the world of high fashion — but over the years, she's established her fashion credibility with a long run of standout dresses.
At this year's Gala, she drew on Balenciaga's archives for this custom gold dress, which was made from 25 metres of taffeta, laminated with gold foil. She wore stark black gloves and heels to contrast with the glittering gold ensemble.
Queen Latifah
Queen Latifah made no secrets about how excited she was to collaborate with famed designer Thom Browne. While she'd worn Thom Browne stylings before, this was her first time attending the Met Gala — and Browne created a stunning dress to fit the occasion.
The glossy black dress came complete with 3D orange flower details, all topped off with a black coat with white fringe. Elegant silver earrings and a clean hairstyle helped make the outfit pop.
Naomi Watts
Watts looked graceful and refined in her custom-made Balenciaga dress. The gown itself had a minimalistic form factor, but was highlighted with sparkly sequins and a short, flowing train.
The top of her gown had a puffy motif with subtle flowery patterns, and Watts complemented the look with a black mesh veil, long white opera gloves, and several pieces of jewelry. Her rouge makeup added some color to the ensemble.
Brie Larson
Bie Larson's Met Gala dress looked like a technological marvel, as it wasn't immediately clear just what was giving the hoop skirt its shape. Her outer skirt was sheer, which revealed a burnt orange number underneath.
It's a refreshingly outside-the-box look for the Met Gala. The Prada design was inspired by an orange and grey gradient dress that was part of their 2007 collection. Dangling gold earrings added even more warm tones to her look.
Amanda Seyfried
Seyfried channeled her inner flapper with this look. Her short hair, with its new silvery hue, along with playful headgear, made for a look reminiscent of the 1920s.
Her silver hair and fuchsia lipstick were the perfect match for her silver Prada gown with its fuchsia floral detailing. The custom dress was inspired by Prada's 2009 spring collection, and was made from repurposed Prada materials — a decision that appealed to the eco-conscious Seyfried.
Charli XCX
Other red carpet designs feature a host of rare and unusual materials, but the English pop star opted for old t-shirts for her punk-inspired red carpet ensemble.
Her dress had high fashion bona fides — it was designed by Francesco Risso of Marni — but it was literally made of 50 or so used T-shirts dating back to the 1950s and '60s. It was topped off with subtle rhinestone embellishments to create an eye-catching look.
Doja Cat
When others zig, Doja Cat zags — and that's never been more apparent than what the rapper chose for her 2024 Met Gala moment. Her white gown was made by Vetements, but many online are describing it as a "wet t-shirt" look.
Doja Cat said her look was, in fact, inspired by flowers — the humble cotton flower, of which this gown is made. Her look was accentuated with smoky eyes and a bleached buzz cut.
Kendall Jenner
Fashonistas might recognize Kendall Jenner's distinctive dress — even though the 2024 Met Gala was the first time it was ever seen on an actual person.
That's because the dress is a vintage 1999 creation from Alexander McQueen, who created it for Givenchy. While the dress has been seen before, it's only been worn by mannequins. The fact that a 25-year-old dress looks so stylish and modern in 2024 is a testament to McQueen's abilities as a designer.
Lana Del Rey
Del Rey had an ephemeral, dreamy vibe going on at the Met Gala, thanks in large part to her her signature headpiece and veil, which offer a sheer glimpse at her hairstyle.
The Alexander McQueen creation harkens back to the designer's 2006 Widows of Culloden fashion show, and captures a certain gothic timelessness — one that's accentuated by the organic vibes of the vine motif throughout the gown.
Nicole Kidman
The ever-stylish Kidman wore a feathery black and white outfit to the 2024 Gala, consisting of a white Balenciaga Couture gown, long white gloves, and a feathery black skirt for contrast.
She opted for fairly simplistic hair, makeup and jewelry, which allowed her monochromatic ensemble to shine. The dress, with its double silk bustier, was apparently inspired by a Balenciaga dress that dates back to the early 1950s.
Dua Lipa
Dua Lipa walked the red carpet in a Marc Jacobs gown in black lace, with a stunning corset and feather boa to match. Some statement jewelry from Tiffany helped add some much-needed sparkle to the sheer black ensemble.
The only real color in her outfit might be the most striking part of the whole look: Her dark red hair, which she wore down, allowing it to cascade over her custom gown.
Kim Kardashian
Kim K has turned many heads at the Met over the years, which means she's continually raising the bar for her own personal style. At the 2024 gala, she didn't disappoint, opting for a Maison Margiela gown for her 11th Met Gala.
The outfit is very silver-forward, and features a tight corset with floral themes across the bodice. Her flowing dress is essentially made of flower-shaped chain mail — a statement piece if there ever was one.
Demi Lovato
The 2024 Met Gala was the first one Demi Lovato had attended in eight years, and the singer went for a classy, understated look to mark her return. The strapless white gown was created by fashion designer Prabal Gurung.
Lovato told Vogue that she and Gurung collaborated to make a dress that contrasts strength with fragility. The lamé fabric is festooned with hand-cut mylar flowers, sequins, and glass crystals, making for a cohesive soft white-grey look.
